Martindale-Hubbell® Rating

Greg Feis is AV Preeminent® rated by Martindale-Hubbell®. He is honored to have received the highest rating given by the leading independent attorney rating entity. Martindale-Hubbell® has maintained ratings for lawyers for more than a century, and currently reviews or assigns ratings for over 150,000 lawyers each year. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of other lawyers and judges, and attest to the individual lawyer’s legal ability and adherence to accepted professional standards of ethics. Exclusively developed and assigned by the Martindale-Hubbell® Law Directory, ratings are considered valuable benchmarks intended for use by members of the profession.

An AV Preeminent® rating signifies that the lawyer’s peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence. The rating is made up of two components: the rating for legal ability (professional qualification), and the rating for general ethical standards.

The Legal Ability Rating takes into consideration the standard of professional ability in the area where the lawyer practices, the lawyer’s expertise, and other professional qualifications. Legal ability ratings are as follows, with “A” being the highest rating:

  • C (Good to High)
  • B (High to Very High)
  • A (Very High to Preeminent).

An AV Preeminent rating is a significant accomplishment – a testament to the fact that a lawyer’s peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence for legal knowledge, communications skills and ethical standards.

The General Ethical Standards rating denotes adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities. There is only one General Recommendation Rating which a lawyer can receive, and that is:

  • V (Very High): A lawyer will not receive a Legal Ability Rating unless he or she has been endorsed for a “V.” When both categories of ratings are confirmed, a lawyer receives a “CV”, “BV”, or “AV” rating based on the endorsement received.

A lawyer’s rating will generally improve over time. But ratings can be revised downward, or even removed if a decline is noted in ability or ethical standards.
